Gatekeepers and Quality control

In the hyper capitalist and Warhol inspired fast food celebrity we have struggled to frame what is good and what is good for the market. Every artist has faced questions about fighting for what they want to do and finding some way to appeal to more. The more can be broad and is not linked automatically to monetary value – it can also be cultural cache, sex appeal, fitting in or standing out better. But mostly artists just want to do their work and then sometimes share it. And perhaps it can all be loved as creative expression. But there is work that speaks to many and some that speaks to fewer. The measure is hard against the march of time and the evolution of culture…and yet I erase the sentence I wrote proclaiming that there is bad art.

So then when is the gate keeping a measure of quality, or a measure of marketability or a measure of privilege and access? Is it all flawed or do we just wish we were part of the gatekeepers?
