When a student comes into class and comes over to tell you that they suffered a concussion over the weekend, as a teacher, we acknowledge the information, recognize the possible harms the child has suffered, are informed that there are gradations to such an incident, and ask about ways to help. Teachers do not: role their eyes, make a comment like “oh that excuse again”, react by saying it probably wasn’t that bad, tell the student it didn’t happen, insinuate it was the students fault, ask probing questions, deny any compassion to the young person, or gossip to other teachers about it. Teachers need to respond to incidents of racism in the same manner, with respect and compassion, remembering that #racismkills. #blackstudentsmatter #teachershavehomeworktoo
